Alliston, Ontario and the surrounding areas of Tottenham, Beeton and Adjala-Tosorontio are some of Southern Ontario's hidden Real Estate gems. These communities are idyllic for growing families, those downsizing, or commuters looking for a quiet escape from the highly populated areas without an outrageous commute.
We sat down with our Professional, Loving, Local Realtors® who serve in what is affectionately termed "New-Tec" area and know these townships inside and out. Sales Partners Joseph Madsen, Michelle McCague, Shaker Srouji and Tina McCarty all live and raise their families in the area and participate and volunteer in the community. They know all the best spots, local haunts and, most importantly, have all the information you need to decide on your next home.
Here's what they had to say:
"Alliston is a great place for raising families with multiple schools, tons of playgrounds, and two splash pads. It's a small-town feel with great amenities with an excellent sense of belonging” says Joseph. “In addition, Stevenson Memorial Hospital is getting revitalized, and the public high school (Banting Memorial) is slated for replacement soon as well which is approximately a $48 million project" says Joseph.
"Adjala-Tosorontio is primarily rural with several small villages and hamlets throughout," continues Joseph. “Everett, the larger of the three villages in Adjala-Tosorontio, and has about 2,000 residents. Currently, Everett offers a post office, a corner store with an LCBO, a pharmacy and a family-run restaurant named Sabrina's. Everything you need while benefiting from living in a small town!”
Looking further south within the township of Adjala-Tosorontio, we see the new developments on the border of New Tecumseth and Adjala-Tosorontio just outside Keenansville. There will be detached and townhomes between the $1.79-1.97M price range. "Within Adjala-Tosorontio, there are also several established and sought-after rural subdivisions such as Piper Hill Estates, Woodland Heights with varying properties boasting a few acres or more," says Michelle McCague.
Joseph adds, "And Honda recently announced a $1.4B investment into upgrading their plants – a total of three separate plants that will employ thousands of workers locally."
"HANDS DOWN….Cedar Kitchen, a staple in Tottenham, is known for serving their all-day breakfast and offering the BEST breakfast!!!" says Tina and Shaker readily agrees.
Located in the heart of Tottenham, this restaurant is well-loved among the locals. Known for their wide menu selection, portion sizes and fantastic service offered by owners Danielle & Sherri, you will be most impressed. The restaurant will be celebrating 40 years in business next year!
"Every small town in this area has a special charm and appeal. For me, I found Tottenham is the perfect place to raise a family! Amenities such as parks, water pads, churches and shopping are all within walking distance from anywhere in town," says Tina. "Tottenham is a neighbourhood that boasts proximity to the necessities such as schools and daycares, making your morning commute much easier if necessary. In addition, large backyards and public gathering places such as the Conservation area provide plenty of greenspace where you and your children can burn excess energy outside. It takes a village to raise a child, and Tottenham is that village!" continues Tina.
The township of Adjala-Tosorontio comprises Achill, Airlie, Athlone, Ballycroy, Cedarville, Colgan, Conner, Everett, Glencairn, Hockley, Keenansville, Lisle, Loretto, Rosemont, Sheldon, Tioga and Tuam. All of these areas have beautiful rolling countryside dotted with private rural residential properties and small quaint subdivisions in many of the small towns. These villages and hamlets throughout offer a small-town feel with the ability to access all amenities a short distance away in Alliston/Tottenham or Beeton. If you need a bit more variety - Barrie, Bradford or Newmarket are less than 45 mins away.
"Whether within the village or more rural, the children have the advantage of knowing each other at school and bonding through after-school activities. This rings true for parents as well - families become part of their communities in their respective towns," says Michelle.
"Living in the most southerly part of Adjala-Tosorontio which include Ballycroy, Colgan and Hockley is an easier commute of less than an hour," says Michelle. "The more northern areas are a little bit further from the GTA but they provide easy access to Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Barrie areas," she concludes.
Without hesitation, Joseph responds, "The Globe Restaurant is in a historic building in Rosemont. It offers a relaxed atmosphere with an upscale menu. The Rosemont general store has great lunches and baked goods specials. Williams Restaurant in Alliston is excellent and locally owned, with a variety of entertainment and a revolving menu. It's right downtown, in the heart of Alliston."
All four Sales Partners agreed that the draw to the New Tecumseth area is:
Affordable Housing: The New Tecumseth area offers various properties, from rural communities to modern subdivisions, with various housing options catering to different budgets. The area offers more affordable housing options than nearby urban centers, making it an attractive destination for homebuyers.
Access to Amenities: Despite its rural setting, New Tecumseth is conveniently located within proximity to Pearson Airport, Brampton, Bolton, Orangeville, and Newmarket. This provides residents with access to the amenities and services of larger urban centers while still enjoying the peacefulness and beauty of the countryside.
Quality of Life: The area offers a high quality of life, with a strong sense of community and a friendly atmosphere. New Tecumseth has numerous recreational opportunities, including hiking trails, parks, and sports facilities, which make it an excellent place for families to live and grow. Additionally, the area has low crime rates, which contributes to the overall safety and security of the community.
"There are many hiking trails, campgrounds like Earl Rowe, and several walking and biking trails. You can watch salmon migrate Sept-Oct or find a quiet spot at one of the many rivers to drop a line in the water yourself." says Michelle.
One quick Google search will show prospective buyers contemplating moving to the area that there are numerous options for hiking and hunting, snowmobile trails, ski hills (Mansfield in neighbouring Mono), cross-country skiing and outdoor ice rinks.
"Taking a hike or walking your dog at the trails at the Gibson Trail or Beattie Pinery Provincial Park make for year-round nature quests. Earl Rowe Provincial Park also has awesome summer camping and activities," adds Joseph.
"YES! The South Simcoe Railway is a steam heritage railway located in our very own backyard in Tottenham. It is the oldest operating steam heritage railway in Ontario and features Canada's second-oldest operating steam locomotive. They offer excursions from Tottenham through the Beeton Creek Valley on weekends throughout the summer and during Christmas and Easter," says Tina.
“Sheldon Creek Dairy in Loretto just north of Bolton was the number 1 choice from the team. This family run business has been farming the land since 1953 and has been run by the den Haan Family since day one. They craft the milk from their purebred Holstein herd into whole milk, yogurt, kefir, 45% cream and cheeses. They also carry a large selection of frozen meals, desert, baked goods and eggs and meat and are open 7 days a week!” says Tina.
"Any one of the beautiful trails will give you the perfect backdrop for photos," said both Michelle and Shaker.
"Unbeatable Instagram photos can be taken at the amazingly restored Gibson Centre" says Joseph. The Gibson Centre for Community, Arts & Culture is a historically rich, versatile, and beautifully restored space located in the heart of New Tecumseth. Beginning as a farm implement factory in 1889, they now host many cultural activities and have space rentals for weddings and events.
"Various movies have been filmed in the New Tecumseth area, including Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham. Many Hallmark movies are included on that list. Murder She Wrote also had an episode filmed in Tottenham." says Tina.
"You're going to find homes of all types - new and old in quaint subdivisions. Many homes have winding roads and large lots and plenty of small hobby farms," says Michelle. She continues, "People are drawn to the areas due to lifestyle, lot sizes/acreage/proximity to local amenities."
"Sabrina's in Everett is home-cooked Italian food that never disappoints, has weekly specials and offers frozen meals to pick up for a delicious dinner!" says Michelle.
"Without a doubt, A Taste of Freedom. Set in a charming restored Victorian home, this restaurant will not disappoint. Serving delicious foods in a warm, casual atmosphere with fireplaces throughout. It has beautifully landscaped gardens and is the best patio in Tottenham, maybe even in New Tecumseth!" says Tina.
"The biggest myth is that you are isolated or it's too far to get to amenities," says Michelle, and the others agree. "Most areas are less than 15 mins to larger towns!"
"The Alliston Potato Festival (August 11, 12, 13, 2023) is a huge draw the weekend after the August long weekend. We have a parade, car show and a market and midway with beer gardens, entertainment, and carnival rides," says Joseph.
Joseph quickly jumps in - "The cupcakes from Rebel Crumb are unreal, and butter tarts from Murphy's are so tasty."Shaker adds, "Salvatore's is a great new Italian pastry shop in Tottenham."
"Adjala-Tosorontio is home to several seasonal flower farms. Cut and Dried Flower Farm on Concession Rd 3, north end of Adjala-Tosorontio is great, and so are Grumpas, Laura's Tree Farm, Hens House Farm and Gardens, the Farmers Market, and the Loretto garden store" offers Michelle.
