If you are a senior (or know someone who is a senior) in Ontario paying property taxes, then you will definitely want to send them this article.
Many people have not heard about the OSHPTG, which stands for the Ontario Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant. This is a grant for seniors who paid property taxes in 2021.
This grant is an annual payment that seniors must apply for each year when they file their income tax and benefit return. This means that even after 2022 ends, you will want to reapply for this grant in the coming years to continue to receive this payment.
According to the Government of Canada website, you are eligible for the Ontario Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant if you meet the following criteria:
You were at least 64 years old as of December 31, 2021
You were a resident of Ontario as of December 31, 2021; or
If your spouse or common-law partner owned a principal residence on December 31, 2021, and you, or someone on your behalf, paid Ontario property taxes on it for 2021;
You were not confined to a prison or similar institution on December 31, 2021, and for the next 179 days; and
You filed a 2021 income tax return in which you included an application for the OSHPTG.
To apply for this tax grant, you will have to file a 2021 income tax and benefit return and complete the form titled Application for the Ontario senior homeowners' property tax grant (OSHPTG) area, which you can find here:
Form ON-BEN, Application for the 2022 Ontario Trillium Benefit and Ontario Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant.
Make sure that you attach the completed form to your tax return. This form is included in the tax package for residents of Ontario.
If you are a senior paying property taxes, this ensures you get a bit more money in your pocket, which can help offset some of the rising inflation costs.
If there is ever a time when receiving a grant on property tax can really make a difference, it is in 2022. If you want to learn more about the Ontario Senior Homeowners' Property Tax Grant, click here to visit The Government of Canada's website.
